KPV is a short chain of three amino acids (Lysine-Proline-Valine, hence KPV by their one-letter abbreviations) that represents the core active sequence of α-MSH, a hormone vital for regulating immune and inflammatory responses. The significance of KPV is that it retains the strong anti-inflammatory effects of the parent hormone without influencing other functions like skin pigmentation. 

Its primary mechanism involves entering cells, often via a peptide transporter called PepT1, where it directly interferes with inflammatory signaling pathways, most notably by inhibiting the activation of NF-κB, a master regulator of inflammatory gene expression. This action prevents the overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines (like TNF-α and IL-6) that fuel chronic inflammation. 

KPV is an investigational or “research-grade” peptide, not an FDA-approved drug for human use, so its applications are currently limited to laboratory and preclinical research. Research suggests promising potential for managing various inflammatory conditions:
